HOW TO DEEP CONDITION YOUR HAIR AT HOME
Hello!
So I often get asked by hair dressers why I don’t come to ‘steam at the salon’, I just laugh because it’s not that I’m trying to be frugal but I can actually do it myself at home, so why visit the salon. Especially when I have the time to.
The only difference is that I may not have a steamer at home, but a warm towel and shower cap would do just fine.
Today I’d be sharing how you can get shiny, soft and healthy hair all in the comfort of your home. But before I go ahead, here’s why you should deep condition.
- Deep conditioning helps to hydrate and soften hair.
- It also helps to revive damaged hair from chemical processing (like hair color, perming or chemical straightening), heat exposure (the sun, curling & flat-iron), and even some health medications.
- Deep conditioning helps to improve hair elasticity by restoring moisture that allows the hair to better resist stretching and tension. Think of your hair like a rubber band, the more elasticity (or flexibility enabled by good hydration) it has, the longer it can resist tension or stretching before it breaks. In addition to making the hair look healthier and feel softer, deep conditioners are essential for preventing and combating hair breakage.
The essential ingredients offered by most deep conditioners are intended to mend and nourish your hair, this is why you need to leave the deep conditioner in your hair a bit longer than a traditional conditioner before rinsing so that it can penetrate the hair, 30 minutes is a good time.
Personally, I deep condition my hair at an average of 2 times a month. But if you have badly damaged hair you should do this once every week.
HOW TO:
Pre poo is the term for processes before shampoo. So this is where I spray my hair with coconut oil. Coconut oil is great because it absorbs quickly into the hair and conditions the hair. Hence, the chemicals in the shampoo doesn’t dry out my hair. I leave this on for about 10-20 minutes before wash.
- STEP 2: Wash with shampoo
It’s best to wash your hair with your finger pads, this is key because your finger nails may injure your scalp and also pull out hair follicles. If you feel your hair is so dirty and you must “scratch”, try doing an Apple cider Vinegar rinse prior. i.e one part ACV to 6-part water in a spray bottle. You spray this mixture all over your scalp and leave on for about 20 minutes. The solution will lift dirt off your scalp making wash process easier. After washing with shampoo I T-shirt dry my hair damp.
- STEP 3. Apply deep conditioner.
I normally use olive oil deep conditioner from Africa’s best, but recently I bought the henna treatment wax deep conditioner from Beauty formulas. I used it yesterday and it worked quite well. I applied the product all over my hair with more concentration on my edges and the mid section of my hair. Once my entire head is covered, I wear a shower cap with cotton lining inside. This allows heat to generate more. If you don’t have a steamer, you can wrap a warm towel over your shower cap. I leave the deep conditioner on for 30 minutes only. Then I head to the bath and rinse it out.
After step 3 I apply a regular conditioner, leaving it on for two minutes then I rinse it out with Cold water. Cold water helps to seal moisture better. I T-shirt dry again.
- STEP 5: Apply a leave in conditioner
(I use Cantu shea leave in conditioner). After applying the leave in conditioner, I apply an oil ( e.g Jojoba oil) and follow-up with shea butter. I do this in sections using a butterfly clamp to separate them. I twist up the sections upon completion. I usually end up with 8-11 twists. Then leave to dry naturally or blow dry if in a hurry.
In the end, my hair comes out soft, shiny and fluffy. This is the best condition for my everyday style which is a bun. I hope this step by step process helps you when next you’re deep conditioning!
Xoxo

yes, thanks for the step by step explanation. I can testify to the deep conditioner from beauty formula. I got the henna treatment wax too(one of the things I bought at the meet and greet) my hair was super soft compared to the diy and other conditioners I have used. this is going to be my go to deep conditioner for God knows how long. I will try the ACV rinse in my next wash day.

Exactly, made my hair so soft!
I saw this Beauty Formulas product at Shoprite and almost bought it on impulse. I guess I should go back and buy it and give it a try.
