ACADEMICS WITH WUNMI : MINDSET

IMG_8941 copyHello there!
Trust you all are doing just fine! Well I thought by the time this post is published the Nigerian election would have been conducted. Unfortunately, its been postponed. Quite frankly, I thought the postponement wasn’t called for, reason been that; the election date has been predetermined for over a year now, more so, this insecurity issue has been there for a while now (need for more pro-activeness in Nigeria), I don’t think the six weeks would make any major difference (hopeful though). Also, I believe so many economic and managerial decisions are on hold till the election is done, outsiders/investors will perceive Nigerians as politically unstable (My Opinion). Nigerian stocks for instance is experiencing one of its greatest falls since the postponement announcement (the market reacts to such news negatively). Nigeria shall get to the promise land by the grace of God. I salute all our non-Nigerian readers.

In today’s post, the emphasis is on ‘mind-set’ expedient to possess to excel in research as a student.
I describe ‘mind-set’ simply as the way an individual programs his/her reasoning (mental) abilities which is capable of influencing his attitude or behaviour towards something or someone.
Before I continue on the mind-set subject, I would like to give an example of my past research projects as well as the mind-set I had alongside. Here are the research works I have carried out till date;
• Adoption Of IFRS in Nigeria: the Idiosyncrasies (2010)
• Opportunities and Challenges Of IFRS Adoption In Nigeria: Nigerian Banking Sector (2011)
• Challenges SMEs face in Nigeria (2012/2013)
• Why Firms Mimic Each Other’s Capital Structure: Explanations from Product Market Competition (2014)

The first three projects basically express the problems perceived in my environment per time thus using my findings to make constructive recommendations. While working on the last project, the aim was to identify practical underlying principle in firm’s financial policies, critically examine and analyse the results of past literatures as well as provide explanations for conclusions reached by recent researchers on the subject matter.
From the example above, we can see how my perception used to be and how it has evolved.
This illustration leads us to the types of mind-sets, according to Carol Dweck ;
a. Fixed mind-set: This mind-set believes every ability is inborn, that is, kings are born not made. Here the mind-set does not embrace development, learning or growth.
b. Growth mind-set: this school of thought believes ‘learning never ends’. That is, kings are not born, they are made. In fact they justify that you re what you’ve made yourself to become. This mind-set encapsulate the CASI/CAPSI mind-sets discussed below.
With academic (research) excellence in view, here are the mind-sets (CASI/CAPI) that’s worked for me as a student researcher;
a. Be Critical: here, you’re basically comparing existing literatures on the subject matter with an open and inquisitive mind. I observe that academic researchers often times ‘tackle’ (in a healthy way) each other’s opinion, i.e, they all want the audience to see through their lens so while ‘A (2007)’ says the earth is spherical in shape, ‘B (2009)’ based on the conclusion of ‘A’ would justify with in-depth analysis that the earth is rectangular thus providing valid evidence why the earth isn’t spherical. The role of a 2015 student researcher here is to understand, question & discuss the point of view of these two researcher in your own words thus justifying either party with contemporary example(s). Being critical could imply contesting existing results or conclusions, proposing new or distinct solutions, looking for gaps yet to be filled in existing literatures.
Note that critical thinking does not represent negativity.
b. Be Analytical: An analytical mind-set simply put, is the breakdown of read literatures (in your own words) into meaningful bits as it relates to your subject area. Being analytical enhances problem-solving and simplicity.
c. Be Solution driven (Problem-solving): one of the key reasons research is carried out is to identify a problem and aim to proffer solution to the problem Identified. More often the problem is obvious or apparent but the solution isn’t, this is where you and I come in with a mind-set to bring a solution. Research is not research until you’re able to solve a problem with your result. ‘Think research, think solution’.
d. Be Inquisitive: as a researcher questioning the status quo (existing literatures, theories & result) is important, being inquisitive sometimes leads you to the light at the end of the tunnel. Having an inquisitive mind-set stimulates the uniqueness of your work and gets you to think outside the box thus bringing ‘something new to the table’ (originality). One of the beauty of research result is finding what people do not know existed, you feel as an ‘inventor’, trust me, it feels good. This is quite similar to being critical.
Embrace these mind-sets at every phase, starting from ‘topic selection’ phase.
Perhaps you have engaged other mind-sets while carrying out your research that are not discussed in this post, Please share in the comment box below. ‘Learning never ends’
I am positive that CAPI/CASI mind-sets will work for you as you engage them in your next research. Excelling in academics and research is the goal.

Having said all, ‘ for who has known the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ’. – 1Corithians2:16

WORD FOR YOU: PEACE

IMG_2379Sometimes do you feel your heart skip at the thought of an issue….or do you just feel distraught when some thoughts cross your mind… I know that feeling too well. I remember about two years ago when I was dealing with some personal issues, I had so much anxiety that it started affecting my dream/sleep life. Oh how I hated those times, but thank God for today.

I often say that in life my top three desires are to 1. to fulfil purpose, 2. have good health and 3. peace of mind.

But more than often life throws us a curve ball which may affect our mood, thoughts, and even happiness, which is not God’s perfect plan. Jesus is the prince of peace(Isaiah 9:6) and above all he wants you to experience calmness and peace in all areas.

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” Philippians 4:6-7

Fear is also another subtle tool of the enemy, he wants you to live in fear so much that your fear holds you back from praying and even believing in the promises of God. It’s an expression of his deceptive nature, he wants to blind-side you on your position and privileges in christ. Remember my post on Deception .

I feel that when we have fear or are emotionally unstable it breeds room for ill thoughts and is an expression of lack of trust in God. I’ve been afraid, I’ve been paranoid, and I’ve been very fearful of what tomorrow holds, but today I thank God for the understanding of his word. Peace is a birthright of a believer. Salvation comes with freedom, joy, deliverance, dominion and Peace. God is not a God of disorder but of peace (1 Corinthians 14:33).

So how do we operate a life of peace? easy.

  • Ask God for peace: Matthew 11:28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls”-
  • Believe you have it, it’s your heritage as a believer. Psalm 85:8 ” I will listen to what God the LORD will say; he promises peace to his people, his saints– but let them not return to folly’ also see John 16:33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
  • Ask God to help you stop any habits that are ungodly and abide in him: Psalm 34:14 ‘Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it’ Also Psalms 119:165 Great peace have they who love your law, and nothing can make them stumble”.
  • Trust God in all your ways- “Romans 15:13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit”

Know that God doesn’t give us fear, he is a God of peace. So if a situation in your life gives you fear it can’t be from him….I pray that every heart reading this post may be filled with the peace and joy of God that surpasses all human reasoning in Jesus name.

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid” John 14:27

Have a peace filled day, week, month, year and life ahead!

FIFTY SHADES OF NOTHING

My twitter bio says “say no to indecent entertainment”, and I certainly didn’t put that up to be self-righteous. As a young lass, I believe I’ve been through a whole lot of experiences, which averagely aren’t the norm and I know from first hand experience the impact of the media on a person’s life.

I’m very passionate about positive entertainment via the media, and that’s one of the key reasons why I started blogging or ventured into media. Personally, I feel this topic is a broken record, but it’s still so painful that christians in this day and age still fill themselves with obscure content.

There is nothing as ” Just for the fun of it”  I often tell people that every action, word, or gesture we do/entertain MUST be edifying in some form. Be it watching movies or having a basic conversation. Everything must add value.

This weekend was Valentine’s and the movie ‘Fifty shades of Grey” premiered. I never read the book/books and I’m grateful I didn’t. I listened to the review from a friend and I could already envisage the content of the book. This afternoon, an acquaintance of mine shared a link to an article/review about the movie and I read it. It was titled ‘A letter to my children about fifty shades of grey” It’s a Must Read!  Here are excerpts of what the author had to say.

“Fifty shades of grey is NOT a romantic movie, rather it’s a movie about a narcissistic man’s controlling and violent sexual desires and his sense of entitlement to use and abuse a vulnerable young woman’s body and mind as tools for his own gratification. It’s all about his needs, coupled with the arrogant expectation that she should comply, regardless of her discomfort, to please him.”

Don’t allow this romanticizing of sexual domestic abuse fool you into believing that you should ever allow yourself to be treated like Anastasia Steele. Please, my son, don’t watch this one day and believe that it’s ever okay to intimidate, manipulate or disrespect a woman like the ‘hero,’ Christian Grey. Nobody, male or female, wants or deserves to be disrespected, manipulated or violated against his or her wishes”

Even prior to reading the article, I knew the movie was a no-no. This last weekend I was just explaining to my friend on why she shouldn’t watch the movie.

As a christian, I’m very cautious of what I watch. This same reason is why I stopped watching Scandal.  It glorifies Infidelity, spite, revenge, malice and lust. Lets not even discuss “Orange is the new black”……..besides my sentiments on this particular show, I learnt that the writer left her marriage to date one of the female actresses in the cast, She said upon writing the script she realised she wanted to be with a woman……..

You see, movies, books, music e.t.c are not just expressions of a writer’s creative imagination….They sow seeds in your heart. Entertainment is one of the devil’s key tools in today’s age. He seeks to deceive you, arouse you, enlighten you and put obscure thoughts in your heart. He knows well that any thing that doesn’t glorify God or isn’t edifying in any form is purely useless. He also knows that anything that doesn’t take you closer to God, takes you Farther away from him. The devil is restless, and he would use anything to take you away from the presence of God.

One difference between you and the devil(amongst others) is that the devil knows his judgement. He has no hope. You have hope, you have Jesus, and the opportunity to accept him if you haven’t. He knows he’s doomed with eternal damnation hence he’s trying to gather company for Abyss. Misery loves company.

Proverbs 4:23 says  ‘Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it”. The word ‘Guard’ in this context means to be a gatekeeper of your heart. To screen, search and assess all things that passes to and fro you.

Nothing is a vacuum, you must fill your heart/mind with something, and with the right content. This post is not just to discourage you from watching fifty shades of grey and similar contents of its genre, but to also encourage you to continually do, watch, read, and hear only edifying things. Don’t deceive yourself and say you’re just being curious that’s why you watch/watched a well staged profanity. God hates luke warm, No greys with Jesus. It’s either black or white, or Hot or cold.

I pray that God fortifies us with an extra dose of discernment and grace to know and do that which pleases him. We will not miss heaven and live a mediocre life in Jesus Name!

WEEKEND ROUNDUP + OWAMBE OOTD

IMG_5097Hello people,

How did your weekend go? Mine was quite busy and exciting….Let me first share a ‘goodnews’, my cargo with all my lights and filming equipment has arrived so I shall begin vlogging ASAP!

So back to my weekend, I Visited quite a few places, from SweetKiwi to IamCookieJar bakery, and also attended a wedding, actually my friend Mimi’s introduction. That was the highlight of the weekend. Mimi brought the Asoebi Gele to me like 3days before the wedding and I had no tailor to sew the outfit. I went down my street and found a tailor who was willing to sew me a dress in short notice.

She charged me for express service, but I collected the dress Friday night and she didn’t disappoint. No amendment needed whatsoever, just a perfect fit. The next day was the event and I tied a Gele…God bless the late Adenike of Ewarmakeovers who put up a video on how to tie a gele on YouTube, that’s how I learnt how to tie……may her soul rest in peace.

I think I didn’t do a horrid Job in that department, I got there in good time and I was pleased my Gele wasn’t out-of-place. (Pink is such a vibrant colour! new fav)

IMG_3911Also over the weekend I received a package from @twentysix.co . I won a lovely skirt on their Instagram page and they had delivered it to my mum since, but my mum just remembered and gave it to me. It was well packaged and the skirt was a perfect fit! I shall do an outfit post on that later…

IMG_8928Also on Sunday afternoon, I went round Lekki today with my friends Lano and Mayowa, I went to sweetKiwi for the first time since I got back to try their frozen Yogurt, I heard about the buzz and wanted to try….and yes it was worth every Naira. I had a mix of the york cheesecake, sweet kiwi and pineapple flavour…toppings were granola, grapes and oreo cookie crumbs…it was so good! The staff was extremely polite, our attendant’s name was ‘Shedrach’, very courteous man. I also went to cookiejar bakery because Lano was craving some cake, we didn’t eventually get the type she wanted we had to go to coldstone, yet we didn’t satisfy Lano’s sweet tooth…..lolIMG_2721Moving on……..I also deep conditioned my hair this weekend, this Lagos weather hasn’t been the most exciting so my hair needed some TLC. I washed my hair and did a quick vinegar rinse (spraying your hair with diluted acid cider vinegar and washing it out after 20minutes). That helps to wash out dandruff and existing product buildup… I shared on my Instagram page details of that.

Finally! A new salon and makeup studio opened in my area(Ajah), It belongs to my aunt @shalzmakeupGeek , It’s a beautiful environment for your one stop beauty needs. They offer Massages, facials, makeovers, salon , photography etc! Milles visages is located before Ado round about, inside de-legacy Plaza ado road 08181514982. Ensure you visit and refer them! lots of freebies this month!IMG_0910

Anyway that’s how I spent my weekend, How did you spend yours? This morning I’m going to work late because I have to sort out my luggage and tidy up my room….should blog again later in the day!

Have a great week ahead,

Be fruitful.

6 FREE APPS THAT IMPROVE YOUR IMAGING EXPERIENCE

IMG_1665 copyHello!

When it comes to blogging and social media, presentation is key…From video excerpts on my instagram page to my blog images itself. It actually takes a lot of work to get things how you want them i.e. clean & functional. Throughout last year I was able to find various apps and softwares that improved the way I blogged. Some I had to pay for while some were free. For instance video editing softwares like Final cut pro, corel draw et.c would certainly not be free, but you can find trial versions online pending the time you decide to purchase one.

However, today I’d be sharing with you 6 FREE and Read More
