This is a testimony and I hope someone is liberated and encouraged by this.

I have always known there existed a supreme higher being. For me, I have always known this higher being to be God. My walk with him has not always been smooth because there were times when I felt that walking with God was too complex. He is too secretive. How am I supposed to know this? How am I supposed to know that? What am I supposed to do in order to please him? To keep him happy at all times?

These questions are just the tip of the iceberg, compared to the numerous questions that kept lingering in my mind. I am sure at some points most Christian go through this phase. But I am glad I’ve been liberated from false beliefs of what my walk with God should look like.

One question that really stood out in those moments, was the ‘What am I supposed to do in order to please him?’

I carried out so many acts that I was convinced that if I kept doing these things, I definitely pleased the Lord.

I went through the ‘I must be a worker in his house’ route. Working in the house of God was a must for me, if I was not doing it; I felt I was doing something wrong.

I went through the ‘I must tithe’ route. If I do not pay my tithe, I am cursed. I do not want to be cursed. So, tithe! You must be paid.

I went through the ‘I must attend all or most church programmes’ route. If I don’t attend them, God will be upset with me.

The truth is the three mentioned things are good, awesome, and lovely but there is something else that does the pleasing God part, best.

I was liberated when I allowed the spirit of the word of God to do his work, when I had a deep understanding of Romans 12:1-2 MSG:

“So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life- your sleeping, eating, going to work, and walking- around life- and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognise what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.”

One of the reasons I love ‘the message’ bible version is that it just ‘does it’ for me. Forgive me for bombarding you with a longer version, compared to that of KJV.

So yes, what God requires from us as his children is our lives, not the activities, cultures or rituals we perform. Those are secondary. The only way we can please God is when we become ‘living sacrifices’. That is, not taking ownership of our lives, but surrendering the life, and all that pertains to our lives, to him.

This is the service that God requires of us.

Being a worker in church, paying our tithes, attending church programmes is not the fruit we are to bear as children of God. The primary purpose of God’s calling upon our life is to be living sacrifices. God requires this of us because, he knows that the other activities that follow will be done in a different way and with understanding, not out of fear or compulsion.

Till this day, I still ask God for more revelation on Romans 12:1-2. Because I personally feel that scripture carries a lot of information, than what is known.

But what I want us to know is that, God wants YOU more than your services.

God bless you!

  3. Before I thank my friend for sharing this great post with me, I just had to comment. What an amazing post that hit the nail on the head. There’s no shortcut to serving God than how this was put;our lives are the ultimate sacrifices. Amazing. Plus I must get a bible with this version. So plain and well explanatory. Great post. X

  4. Thanks so much Tosin and Chimnonso for this piece. Yes, I was edified by it. Please can you explain the concept of “living sacrifice”? Its a bit vague for me. Thank you.
